The night was still young; we decided to go for a drive up into the mountains so we could watch the city from afar and get away from the nightlife; to be alone together. I pulled into the spot where I remember sitting on my own so many times. The people who lived nearby had built a fence there now. This time I wasn’t on my own. We stepped out of the car, she couldn’t get up on her own, so I lifted her up onto the tall, cold stone fence; trying to maintain some class as she was wearing a skirt. Then I climbed up onto the fence and sat next to her; she rested her head on my shoulder.
We looked out at the city and could see all the traffic lights – Red. Green. Orange. We watched as they all changed and we worked out all the patterns of the different lights. We liked doing that kind of random stuff together.
Green.
There was a cold breeze about, so I gave her my jacket. She said she wasn’t cold but I could tell she was. She always wondered how I knew exactly what she was thinking. So did I.
I put my arm back over her shoulder as she snuggled into me. Then I took her hand in mine and she smiled warmly.
“Darling.”
“Yes?”
Orange.
I didn’t know what to say. So we sat there in silence for a few moments. I kissed her gently on the lips and continued to look out over the city. Her hand felt cold, so I put it under my shirt up against my back to warm it. The sudden presence of her cold hand chilled my skin. She smiled up at me and I nudged her nose with mine playfully. She giggled again and gazed out past the city and over the ocean. We kept watching the lights as they continued to change.
Green.
I ran my fingers along her forearm. Having long fingernails came in handy. She smiled softly; that cute smile that she so often melted my heart away with. I opened my mouth and waited for the words to come out.
Red.
She flinched.
“Are you okay?”
“Fine, I thought I was about to get hit by a big bug” she said.
I smiled and pulled her in close again. She put her arms around my waist and held me tightly.
Green.
I felt my shoulders start to tense a little. That’s what they do when I want to do something really badly but I hesitate. My shoulders kind of tense and move forward a little. It’s weird and hard to properly explain. So I sat there with my mouth half open, waiting for the words to spill out into the cold, early morning air. She couldn’t see, but somehow she knew.
“What is it?” she asked me.
Orange.
I was caught off guard and didn’t know what to say. I told her I just liked the feeling of the cold air running down into my lungs. We both knew there was something else I wanted to say.
Red.
I started to get anxious. My mouth kept opening a little more as I waited for the words to come. But there was nothing. I swallowed hard.
Green.
Then I caught myself off guard again and my mouth opened itself. Then it all started to flow.
“You know darling,” – out it came. In that second I knew I couldn’t stop there. The flood gates were open.
“Yes?” she said. I could tell she knew I was about to say something big because she’d turned her head up a little so she could see me.
Facing down a little, my eyes came to rest over her beautiful face. Even more beautiful when complemented with the cool moonlight.
“You remember when we first got together?” The words kept coming.
“Ever since then, you’ve done nothing except be the most wonderful part of my life. There’s so much you do for me that I could never repay.”
Orange.
Green.
“And I love you so much…”
Red.
I hesitated.
“I love you so much too.” she said, giggling.
Green.
“And you know what?”
Red.
“…” My jaw seized.
“What?” she asked.
Green.
“You know what I want?” I’d asked it, I had to do it then or I’d never have been able to. Before she could respond it all flowed out. Straight from my heart to my mouth.
“I want to spend the rest of my life and yours, doing what ever I can to do for you what you’ve done for me.”
She looked at me, as though she knew there was something going on in my head, she seemed to know that it was more than just one of my affectionate ramblings.
I took her left hand and stretched out her fingers. I put my hand into my pocket and slid my little finger down into the ring which I had been concealing – it was the only finger small enough to fit the ring.
I raised my little finger up so that my nail met the tip of her ring finger. I gently eased the ring off with my thumb and let it slide down onto her nimble finger. The subtle diamond in the top of the ring caught the moonlight and it reflected a small spot of light directly into her eye, making her squint. As she squinted I could see small tears starting to form in her lower eyelashes. Before I could say anything, she burst into tears and threw her arms around me.
“Oh God yes!” she said as she held me tighter than she’d ever held me before; joyful tears streaming down her face. We sat in that tight embrace for what seemed like hours.
A tear came to my own eye as I smiled to myself and looked up towards the moon; caught in a love-induced euphoria as we sat there. Nothing more needed to be said.
